The Workshop

Unlearning Obedience: Resisting Patriarchy in Professional Spaces is a community-rooted, World Café-style workshop for women, queer, trans, gender-diverse folks and allies who want to reimagine how we work and lead.

Many of us – especially women, queer, trans, and gender diverse folks – are taught that success at work means being agreeable, staying quiet about our needs, having unlimited capacities, and being grateful to be where we are, regardless of circumstance. Even in more accepting spaces, productivity is often prioritized over care, power moves quietly through hierarchy, and belonging comes with the pressure to take up less space – to be obedient.

This interactive session invites us to name and unlearn those patterns – to Unlearn Obedience – together.

Co-facilitated by Bree and Chad of NKC Social Impact, this session brings together professionals, entrepreneurs, and community members into conversation – not to be taught, but to think and co-create alongside each other. Using a small-group format, participants will move through a series of guided conversations that explore questions like:

Where do we feel pressure to comply or perform at work?
How does patriarchy shape our professional self-image? Our confidence, relationships, and leadership?
What might work look like if it were rooted in consent and care, trusting your intuition, and building shared power?

There are no “qualifications” to participate in this conversation – the World Café format is designed to honour your lived experience and build upon collective knowledge, making space for reflection, storytelling, and possibility.

This gathering is about imagining new ways of working and leading that encourage productivity and innovation within the workplace while simultaneously honouring our identities and creating space for us. Together, we’ll identify the small acts of resistance that help us to build professional lives that don’t force us to leave ourselves at the door.

About the Speakers

Nascent Knowledge Consulting — Mission
We partner with impact-driven teams to advance equity, cultural safety, and reconciliation—helping organizations secure funding, co-create evidence of impact, and build capacity through culturally grounded evaluation and plain-language, yet strategic communication.

Brianna Hammond (she/her)
Communications strategist and evaluator focused on equity, reconciliation, and cultural safety. Brianna helps nonprofits and research teams craft funder-ready cases and build simple evaluation tools. Her facilitation is trauma-informed and capacity-building, with deep experience supporting Indigenous-led and community health projects.

Chad Hammond (he/him; they/them)
Evaluation and knowledge-mobilization specialist with strengths in participatory methods and OCAP®-aligned governance. Chad co-creates practical, equity-centered measures and translates results into plain-language outputs that teams can use immediately.
